Why did you start your business and how long have you been running it?

Started the business to help small business owners improve their knowledge, skills and overall performance. ABC Business Coaching has traded for 15 years (since 2005)

What struggles do you think most businesses face in your industry and what would you say they need to do to overcome them?

Business owners spend too much time doing day to day tasks that good staff members could do, and not enough time thinking about where their business could grow or markets they could get into. They need to make more time to really monitor their business, set goals for profitable growth and continually implement strategies to satisfy their target markets.

What has been your greatest accomplishment?

I have been privileged to work in bigger corporate businesses and small businesses, and to have helped hundreds of small businesses avoid bankruptcy, achieve strong sustainable growth, and grow into large businesses employing 100+ employees. All this considered, I feel my greatest accomplishment has been always maintaining life balance with my wife (Lisa) of 28 years and our four (4) children. It has not always been easy, but very rewarding.

What has been your biggest ‘fail’ so far?

As a Business Coach, most clients will regularly ask you ‘who do you know that could help us with…’. In the early days I failed to vet some referral partners carefully and as a result I let a particular client down. Thankfully it was only minor, but it taught me that my brand is only as good as the sum of all people working for me and around me. From that day, I have invested more time to ensure referral partners are capable and reflect my values.

What do you love most about your business?

Every small business client is different with their own challenges, which makes every coaching opportunity an exciting challenge.

What do you find most challenging?

Small Business Owners who feel they know it all even though their business is failing to perform.

How do you promote your business (please include as many details as you can)?

80+% of clients are through referrals and Word of Mouth. Aside from that we have a website, facebook page, and some government associations.

Does a good job building credibility.

What lessons have you learnt during your time as an entrepreneur?

Always put the client first and realise that if you truly help them, they will be a friend and colleague for life.

What key tips for success in business would you like to share with others?

Always remember why you went into your own business in the first place and make time to be the business owner/entrepreneur rather than the staff member. You will be rewarded 10 fold.

What is the one thing that you want everyone to take away from this post?

Running your own small business is not easy, you often are wearing many hats and are under pressure day in day out. You do not need to do this all on your own, talking to a business coach initially is free and can help you get a fresh perspective which most business owners need.
