Why did you start your business and how long have you been running it?

We tree changed to Orange NSW, from corporate lives in Sydney. We always wanted to farm something and after much research and very hard work, we decided on saffron due to the perfect climatic conditions in Orange, among other things. We started in 2017, and after a LOT of hard work we are now in our 2nd commercial sized season.

What struggles do you think most businesses face in your industry and what would you say they need to do to overcome them?

Trying to compete with cheap imports which are currently unregulated, and therefore often not pure or authentic saffron.

What has been your greatest accomplishment?

My husband and I preparing the land all by hand (no machinery), and hand planting 40,000 saffron corms, all while still working full time and being parents to a 2 and 4 year old.

What has been your biggest ‘fail’ so far?

Not investing in machinery earlier!

What do you love most about your business?

Everything, we adore it all, even the backbraking stuff. But we particularly love harvest, it is SO exciting every morning to wake up to a paddock of purple.

What do you find most challenging?

Managing a very physical business while also working, and being parents!

How do you promote your business (please include as many details as you can)?

We have a strong following on Facebook and Instagram, and we post there heavily. We have also worked hard to build relationships with several well known restaurants, chefs and food industry people who are advocates for us. We also regularly send emails to our subscribers with saffron recipes and ideas to encourage use.

What business skills do you have (eg. graphic design, customer service)?

Business development, marketing, customer service excellence, process design.

What software did you/your designer use to create your website (eg. WordPress, Wix)?

WordPress.

What are some of your favourite business tools and apps?

Canva, Wordswag.

What do you like about your website and what’s not working for you?

Ease of updating is great. Ability to create member only products and customise experience.

What lessons have you learnt during your time as an entrepreneur?

Keep the long game in mind.

What key tips for success in business would you like to share with others?

Persevere, work hard, follow every lead, never miss an opportunity to talk/comment/share about your business.

What is the one thing that you want everyone to take away from this post?

How you can work harder than ever, but love every single second of it!
