What products/services do you offer?

I offer small business & personal brand photography including headshots & lifestyle, products & flatlays plus event coverage.

Why did you start your business and how long have you been running it?

I was gifted a camera by my wedding photographer husband over 5 years ago and started as a second shooter for him, moving to not so traditional family portraits and finally finding my passion working with small businesses. I truly believe you are the magic at the heart of your biz/brand and telling your story is a must in today’s online landscape. I love empowering women to see themselves how the rest of the world sees them, growing their self confidence
and helping them let go of any self doubt they hold about their appearance.

What struggles do you think most businesses face in your industry and what would you say they need to do to overcome them?

I think its hard to convince new businesses to invest in professional photography in the start up with every phone having a decent camera however its more than just megapixels. I think photographers have to focus on educating potential clients on the ROI of professional photography and just how many ways and in how many places you can use your images.

What has been your greatest accomplishment?

Having the confidence to not take a job where I do not feel I’m paid my worth.

What has been your biggest ‘fail’ so far?

I come away from every shoot with lessons learnt! My biggest fail is not picking an action and doing it and then modifying (in regard to business marketing). I sit there with a heap of ideas too scared to start any in case they don’t work.. when doing nothing is definitely not going to work.

What do you love most about your business?

When people love my images. When I can show them how the world sees them versus the inner critic. When I hear how my photographs have had a positive impact.

What do you find most challenging?

Its actually the diversity of small business photography and how many genres it covers – but I also thrive on that challenge. Oh and dark spaces – I love natural light and recreating that in a small dark room is sometimes a challenge.

How do you promote your business (please include as many details as you can)?

I promote my business on online directories, Facebook, Instagram, website, word of mouth, markets, blogs, Facebook groups and I have done some paid Facebook advertising. I need to add LinkedIn to the list!

What business skills do you have (eg. graphic design, customer service)?

I’m an IT consultant in my other life – so lots of communication & customer service skills, technical skills including writing and website design/creation plus branding, marketing and graphic design knowledge to support my photography clients and I’ve had to become the book keeper and marketing person as a sole trader!

What software did you/your designer use to create your website (eg. WordPress, Wix)?

My website is WordPress.

What are some of your favourite business tools and apps?

  • I love Instaproofs for image delivery.
  • I love google docs/sheets/drive for admin and backup
  • I’m a closet Canva lover

What do you like about your website and what’s not working for you?

I really love my website at the moment as I’ve recently updated it as it seemed to be the thing not converting for me. I want to continue working on my SEO and it could be faster. I do need to add a bookings section for people who just want to book without a conversation and I wish I had time to blog more.

What lessons have you learnt during your time as an entrepreneur?

  • Done is better than perfect.
  • Always deliver value.
  • You’re going to have to get over being humble and self promote but promote on how you can solve problems for others.
  • Not everyone is going to love your photographic style and that is okay! Others will clamour for it.

What key tips for success in business would you like to share with others?

Focus on the things that make the ship go faster, be sure to leave some time to work on your business and niche!

What is the one thing that you want everyone to take away from this post?

Don’t confuse you’re inner critic with your ideal customer – they are note the same.

(oh and there is no such thing as not photogenic – like that’s my entire job to create photos you adore!)
